Canyon Matka

Matka Canyon covers an area of around 5.000ha and is located 15km south-west of Skopje. It is one of the most popular destinations in Macedonia for many tourist and citizens and is home to several monasteries. The Matka Lake together with the Matka Canyon is the oldest artificial lake in the country. There are ten caves at Matka Canyon and the longest is being 176 meters. Matka canyon is one of Macedonia's foremost areas for alpine hiking. The climbing season begins around Easter and ends in November. Kayaking on the Treska River is a popular activity, as are fishing, hunting, and swimming.
